Spartans lose ninth straight

DARTMOUTH -- It's been a long season for Bishop Stang's football program, and though there were a few bright spots, yesterday afternoon's game didn't yield the results that they would've liked, as Durfee pounded it in at Hugh J. Carney Stadium, handing the Spartans a 42-0 loss.

"It's been a continuous thing to not make mistakes," said Spartan co-head coach Tim McCarthy, "and we've made 'em all year. But we're working out, we're really young and I know that the kids are gonna come. They haven't quit, and they're still coming out hard."

Jordan Souza and Ryan Bergeron both had strong days coming out of the backfield for Stang as they were able to help quarterback Casey Cwyner put together some strong drives throughout the game.

"The young kids, they're starting to get it," said McCarthy, "but our problem today was that we were throwing to them more than we were throwing to ourselves today."

The Spartans (0-9) had five turnovers yesterday, with three of them coming in the air.

The Hilltoppers were able to build up the big lead due to an excellent day from their backfield and secondary.

Durfee (4-4-1) got on the board in the first quarter when Matt Moniz found the end zone on a 6-yard run with 2:45 left for a 7-0 lead.

Quarterback Andrew Medeiros found Moniz for a 48-yard touchdown reception on their second play after retrieving the ball on a Stang punt.

It was Seth Louro next for Durfee as he scampered down the field for a 44-yard run for the touchdown in the second quarter after Cwyner's first interception.

Mike Cannistraro came up with a 50-yard TD run on the Hilltoppers' next possession, with the score at half-time 28-0 in Durfee's favor.

Louro came up with another big run to start the second half as he ran 36 yards down the sideline for a touchdown on the third play of the half, while Moniz scored his third touchdown on Durfee's next possession a 4-yard run to the end zone.

Despite of the loss, Bishop Stang is learning from their experience, which they hope to carry next week against Attleboro and on Thanksgiving against GNB Voc-Tech.

"We're very happy with our effort," said McCarthy. "The kids are playing hard, and that's all you can ask for."
